Amphibian Alert Program is Happening on Friday, April 13th at 8pm at Labrador Hollow

Each spring during the first warm rainy night after the equinox, hundreds of amphibians move from underground lairs to vernal pools and we think this is going to happen Friday evening! You won't need to sign up for any more alerts, but if you didn't get on the alert list, check out the message below from our education team and you are welcome to join us and participate in the program.

Update from the Baltimore Woods Staff:

As is often the case in Central New York, the weather report shifted, and at this point our best bet to see salamanders is going to be tomorrow night (Friday). After that it is supposed to cool off again and not really warm up for a couple of weeks. It will be in the high 50s during the day tomorrow, with some rain. I believe some animals will move to the vernal pools, but we may not get the mass migration that we are all hoping for. Some years are just like that - more of a slow trickle.

So let's give it a go! We'll meet in the large parking area at Labrador Hollow at 8pm. Look for the gold Prius with Baltimore Woods magnets on the doors. We'll check people in there. The cost for the program is $6 for Baltimore Woods members and $9 for nonmembers. Please bring cash or a check.

You'll want to dress warm and bring a good flashlight or headlamp. Be ready for rain (also hope for rain!). From the parking area we will walk along the road down to the vernal pools. Depending on how much activity we find, this could be a 30 minute walk out or it could take an hour. We usually wrap the whole evening up by 10 or 11:00. Strollers are good for young children. If you have other mobility concerns, please give us a call at (315) 673-1350 and we can make a plan for accommodations.

To get to Labrador Hollow Unique Area, take I-81 to Tully and head east on Rt 80. Turn right (south) onto Rt 91, and look for Labrador Hollow (and specifically Labrador Crossroad) on the right, about 2 1/2 miles down 91. The parking lot is down a short dirt road on the left. Please please please do not take Markham Hollow Rd, that's where the salamanders will be crossing and they are not fast enough to get away from your car.
